Most owners run everything on their personal credit and their own back. Business credit is the other way — your company becomes its own borrower, with its own score, its own limits, and its own reputation. Here's how to build it from scratch, in order, and the scams to skip.

Your personal credit follows your Social Security number. Business credit follows your company — its EIN, its legal name, its payment history. Building it gives you real advantages:
The D-U-N-S number is a free, 9-digit ID from Dun & Bradstreet — the backbone of your business credit file. You can't have a D&B credit score without one.
Get it free directly from D&B (the free route can take up to ~30 days). They sell a paid expedite (~$229) but you rarely need it — apply the day you set up the business and the wait runs in the background.
Personal credit settled on one familiar 300–850 scale. Business credit never did — there are several scores on different scales, and a lender may pull more than one:
Order matters — skip a step and the later ones stall. The path:
A tradeline is any account that reports your payment behavior to a business bureau. Net-30 vendors let you buy now and pay within 30 days — and the ones that report turn those payments into your credit history. How to do it right:
Don't believe anyone promising you instant "no personal guarantee" funding. The truth: early on, most real business cards (Chase Ink, Amex, Capital One Spark) still require a personal guarantee — meaning you're on the hook if the business can't pay. True no-PG products exist (Brex, Ramp), but they approve based on your revenue and bank balances, not credit history, so a brand-new business with little revenue rarely qualifies. Building business credit doesn't erase personal exposure overnight — it reduces it over time as the company proves itself. That's the honest arc.
Done right, a business becomes scorable in about 60–90 days and genuinely fundable in 6–12 months. That's the real pace. Anyone selling "business credit overnight," "shelf corporations," or ways to borrow big with no history and no guarantee is selling a problem, not a shortcut — those schemes can cross into fraud and wreck both your business and personal standing. The boring path — entity, DUNS, reporting tradelines, pay early, monitor — is the one that actually works.
Set up the entity → free EIN → business bank account in the exact name → searchable address & phone → free D-U-N-S number → open 3–5 reporting net-30 tradelines and pay early → let 3 cycles season for a PAYDEX → graduate to cards → keep utilization low, avoid liens, monitor all three bureaus. Run that play patiently and your business stops leaning on your personal credit and starts standing on its own.
