The one question that sorts everything

Do you have an audience — or not?

Every "make money online" pitch out there is really one of four models. And the fastest way to find your lane is to answer one question: do you already have followers, or are you starting cold? Because here's the part the gurus bury — two of these four pay you with zero audience. You don't have to go viral first. You just have to know which door to walk through.

Read the four below. Each one notes whether you need a following, how you actually get paid, and the honest catch. Then use the "which fits me" tool to find your starting point.

The four models

How the money actually works.

Faceless Content

What it is
You build a channel — usually YouTube or TikTok — without ever being on camera. Stock footage, screen recordings, and AI-generated visuals do the showing; an AI or your own voiceover does the talking.
You get paid
Ad revenue once you're monetized, plus affiliate links and your own digital products stacked on top. Money-niches (finance, tech, education) pay the most.
Need an audience?
No — you build one from zero
The honest catch
Slow to start and it rewards consistency — you're building an asset, not flipping a switch. The upside: once a system works, you can scale it.
Best for
Private people, introverts, anyone who wants income without being a personality.

UGC — Content for Brands

What it is
UGC means "user-generated content." You make short, real-feeling videos — product reviews, demos, unboxings — that brands use in their own ads. You're not posting to your followers; you're handing the footage to the brand.
You get paid
A flat fee per video — beginners around $50–$150, experienced creators $350–$500+. You're paid for the content's quality, not your reach.
Need an audience?
No — none at all
The honest catch
You have to pitch yourself. Build a small portfolio, list on gig platforms (Billo, Trend, Insense), or message small brands directly. No follower count needed — just decent video and hustle.
Best for
People who want to get paid now without waiting to go viral.

The passive layer

Affiliate Marketing

What it is
You recommend a product with a special link. When someone buys through it, you earn a commission — no inventory, no shipping, no customer service. You're just the connector.
You get paid
A cut of each sale. Find products through programs like Amazon Associates, ShareASale, or TikTok Shop. Pair links with an honest review and they convert far better.
Need an audience?
Helps, but not required — even a small, trusting audience or good reviews can earn
The honest catch
Only recommend what you actually believe in — people smell a cash grab, and trust is the whole game. Track your links so you know what's working.
Best for
Anyone who reviews or recommends things — stacks on top of every other model.

Brand Deals & Sponsorships

What it is
A brand pays you to post about them to your audience. This is the one everyone pictures when they think "influencer." It needs a following — but not a huge one.
You get paid
A fee per post that scales with your audience and engagement. A rough starting rule is about $100 per 1,000 followers, adjusted up for strong engagement and niche.
Need an audience?
Yes — this one needs followers
The honest catch
The trap is taking free product instead of cash. Gifts don't pay rent. Know your numbers, send a rate, and ask for what you're worth — get it in writing.
Best for
Creators who've built a real, engaged following.

✓ Checkpoint 01
You've got zero followers but want to get paid by brands as soon as possible. Which model is built for that?
Right — UGC. Brands pay you for the video itself, not your reach, so you need no audience at all. Build a small portfolio, pitch, and you can land paid work fast. Brand deals are the opposite — they require a following.

The real secret

The money is in the stack.

Nobody who's actually winning relies on one stream. They stack them — the same content and audience feeding several income sources at once. Here's what a stacked creator's month can look like:

Base
Faceless channel  ad revenue that builds over time
+ Per job
UGC videos  paid gigs for brands on the side
+ Passive
Affiliate links  commission from what they recommend
+ Premium
Brand deals  sponsors once the audience grows
Don't stack on day one

Pick one model, get a first win, then add the next layer. Stacking is the goal — not the starting line. Trying to run all four at once is how people burn out before they earn a dollar.

✓ Checkpoint 02
You want income that keeps coming in from links you placed weeks ago, even while you sleep. Which model is that?
That's it — affiliate. Once a link is out there inside content people keep finding, it can earn on its own. That's why it's the "passive layer" that stacks on top of everything else.

Find your lane

Which model fits you?

Tap whichever sounds most like your situation right now.

✓ Checkpoint 03
What's the smartest way to approach the four money models?
Exactly. One model, one win, then layer. The big earners stack multiple streams — but they got there one step at a time, not by spreading thin on day one.

Keep going

You know the models. Next: know your worth.

Coming up in the free series — the basics of getting paid fairly: the creator tiers, what your numbers are worth, and why you take the money instead of the free gift. The deeper how-to for each model lives in the paid track, but the literacy stays free.
