The thesis

Tech moves faster than a degree.

A four-year computer degree is built on a curriculum that was written years before you walk in — and in tech, especially now that AI is rewriting the field every few months, that's a problem. By graduation, half of what you learned has shifted. Meanwhile the industry has quietly changed how it hires: more and more employers, including the federal government, care less about the diploma on your wall and more about whether you can do the work and prove it with a recognized credential. That opens a door that wasn't there a generation ago. You can learn a focused, in-demand skill in weeks to months, earn a certification that costs a few hundred dollars, and walk into a real job — then stack the next credential and climb. No lecture hall and no decades of debt required.

This isn't anti-college. It's pro-options. Here's how the skills route actually works.


The model

Stack a couple. Then climb.

You don't get everything at once. You get one credential, land the first job, then add the next one while you're earning. Each rung costs a little and lifts your pay a lot.

Most people start in IT support — it's the widest entry door and it teaches you the fundamentals everything else builds on. From there you branch into security, cloud, or data once you know which work you actually like. You're not locked in; you're getting started.

Which certification is the gateway to government & defense tech jobs specifically?
Right. Security+ meets the Department of Defense's 8570/8140 requirement, which makes it mandatory for tens of thousands of government and defense-contractor security roles. If GovTech is your target, Security+ is the key that fits the most doors.

Google Career Certificates

~$49 /month

IT Support, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Project Management & more, on Coursera. Finish in 3–6 months, so roughly $150–$300 total. Beginner-friendly, no experience needed.

The classic foundation for IT support. Two exams at about $265 each. The credential employers recognize for help-desk and field-tech roles.

How to pay way less (or nothing)

Students with a .edu email get up to 50% off CompTIA exams. Military and veterans can get exams covered through DoD COOL or the GI Bill. And most IT employers — especially government contractors — reimburse your cert costs once you pass, or pay upfront. Always ask before you pay out of pocket.

⚠ The honest caveat

A cert opens the door — it doesn't walk you through it. The entry-level market is competitive, so pair your credential with proof you can do it: hands-on lab projects, a small portfolio, and steady applications. A degree still helps for some specialized or research roles, and you can always do both. The point isn't "skip college" — it's that you have a real, faster, cheaper option that didn't exist before.

Besides earning a cert, what makes you actually hireable for a first tech job?
Right. Certs get you past the first filter, but employers want evidence. Capture your lab work, build a one- or two-page portfolio, and apply steadily — that combination is what turns a credential into an offer.

Start free now — Google's intro courses, free labs, YouTube. Build toward your first cert (A+ or a Google certificate) so you can sit it around 18. Use that .edu discount.

Young adult (18–25)

Go straight for a foundation cert, build a small lab portfolio, and apply while you study. Security+ early makes you eligible for government and defense roles.

Career-changer (any age)

Tech doesn't care how old you are. Use evenings to earn a cert, lean on employer reimbursement or veteran benefits, and translate your past experience into your new lane.
